How The Pandemic Made The Rest Of The World Fade On Television News

Feature Charticle

Television news programming in the US has long relied on Google Earth to show viewers where a particular location is when covering events in the rest of the world. The timeline below shows the total seconds per month since July 2010 in which the credit line "Google Earth" appeared somewhere in the onscreen text of ABC, CBS and NBC evening news broadcasts. ABC evening news has used Google Earth to illustrate world geography a total of 3.55 hours over the past decade, followed by 3.12 hours on NBC and 0.72 hours on CBS.

Use of Google Earth has been fairly constant over the past decade until March 2020 when it all but disappears from the evening news, reflecting that in a pandemic world of sealed borders and locked down populations, with the virus sweeping across the US, television coverage appears to have shifted inwards.
