The State Of The 2020 US Presidential Race In Media Coverage: Democratic Presidential Candidate Mentions 2019-2020 (CNN/MSNBC/Fox Chyrons)
Using data from the Internet Archive's Television News Archive processed by the GDELT Project, the streamgraph below shows the total number of mentions of each of the major 2020 Democratic presidential candidates in the chyron text (also known as the "lower third") across the combined airtime of CNN, MSNBC and Fox News from January 1, 2019 to April 20, 2020. (A streamgraph is an area chart where the data series are stacked on top and below of each other around a central axis; positioning above/below is not meaningful -- only the relative height of each series.)
Biden has long been mentioned the most of any of the candidates in the chyron text, with fairly steady coverage over 2019 and into 2020. This makes sense given chyrons' summarizing role. Like spoken word mentions, chyrons see a noticeable jump in February 2020, a sharp drop in mid-March as Covid-19 took over the news and a respite in April as Biden is increasingly in the news.
