Satire Check: The Onion Tweets That It's Banned from Twitter. Snopes Investigates.
One week after the Twitter account Libs of TikTok was temporarily suspended, satirical outlet The Onion decided to get in on the fun, issuing a tweet that reads, "The Onion has been banned on Twitter, follow us on Twitter for more updates." Throughout the day, the Onion continued demanding, via Twitter, that it should be unbanned.
But was the Onion truly suspended? We would have no way of knowing, except that thankfully, Snopes was on the case.
In a fact check headlined "The Onion Has Been Banned on Twitter, Tweets The Onion," Snopes rates the claim "The Twitter account for the parody news site The Onion has been banned from Twitter" as "Labeled Satire."
Luckily, Snopes got the joke, which has not always been the case. Nevertheless, when fact-checkers review satirical claims, it's typically because those claims get shared out of context and may be mistaken for truth. In this case, however, this seems like a silly claim that didn't need to be fact-checked.
That said, perhaps an explainer of the Libs of Tiktok suspension, or that of a Christian satire outlet called the Babylon Bee, would have been useful for anyone who saw the Onion's tweets but didn't get the joke. But instead of mentioning either actual Twitter suspension, fact-checker Bethania Palma simply lists the Washington Post's investigate look at Libs of Tiktok as Snopes' sole source for this fact check, even though the Post doesn't address the Onion.
